Jesus' Prayer of Surrender From the Cross

In His final moments, with His last breath, Jesus prayed a prayer of complete surrender: 'Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.' These were not random words — they were from Psalm 31:5, a prayer Jewish children learned to pray before sleep. Jesus died as He lived: in the Father's hands, trusting Him completely.
[46] Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. (ESV)
- •Jesus' last prayer was a quote of Scripture — a lifelong prayer made personal. He addressed God as 'Father' — intimate to the very end. He committed His spirit — not His body, not His legacy, but His very self — into the Father's care. He died with trust, not fear.
Prayer is not just for the beginning or middle of life — it's for the end. The prayers we pray now become the prayers we pray in our final moments. To trust God with our spirit — our deepest self — is the ultimate act of faith. We can live and die in the Father's hands.
Jesus died praying. His last breath was a prayer of trust, drawn from Scripture. He had prayed this prayer His whole life — as a child, as a man, and now as a Savior. Prayer was His first language and His last.
Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit. I trust You with my life, my death, and everything in between. I place my deepest self in Your care. Help me to live every day in this posture of surrender, so that when my time comes, I can pray it with peace.
